SSI ECO DIVER:

The SSI ECO Diver program brings together community groups, government agencies, academia and business partners:

SSI ECOLogical Diver must complete the following:
1. Perfect Buoyancy Specialty,

Perfect Buoyancy Specialty Dive 1 or

Perfect Buoyancy Specialty Diver Course

Student must display proficiency in hovering

Understand the importance of streamlining dive equipment.

Emphasis on finning technique

Understand the importance of not disturbing bottom compositions such as sand and silt.

2. Minimum of one clean-up dive

Student must be fully briefed before assisting on a clean up dive by an SSI Dive Professional.
Emphasis will be placed on:
- Diver & Dive buddy safety.
- What constitutes a risk to the environment and what should / could stay.
- The importance of recording what has been collected.
- Disposing of collected debris and litter responsibly.

The student will then complete the following to take the total number of dives to 4

Be certified in one of the following SSI Specialties:

SSI Fish ID

SSI Naturalist

SSI Shark Diver

Reef Ecology

ED Scuba and Alu Alu Divers are the only ssi dive centerS in KL and Malaysia offering the SSI Eco Diver program at the moment. The SSI Eco Diver program is targeted at certified divers and teaches divers how to survey a local coral reef and compile the results into a datasheet . The Foundation then analyzes the data and draws up sustainable management programs for the locals to use in order to rehabilitate the reef and to ensure its health in the future. Some of the management programs would be the setting up of Marine Protected Areas, as well as guidelines to overfishing, sedimentation, over-construction.

In Malaysia local islands especially, tourism is a major contributing factor to the destruction of our coral reefs. In their rush to tap into the tourist dollars, there is construction of local marinas and resorts that result in a lot of damage to our coral reefs.

Scuba Diving Malaysia offers the SSI Eco Diver program, as well as doing four Reef surveys a year.
